Imagine this …
A group of friends were invited to dinner hosted by a famous chef. In greeting one of the guests, a well-known photographer, the chef commented: “I love your photos. You must have a very expensive camera.”
The photographer smiled to herself and walked into the dining room.
After dinner, the photographer approached the chef and said, “Dinner was incredible, a true work of art! You must have a very expensive oven.”
Of course, having access to top-notch equipment is wonderful, but put an expensive camera in the hands of an amateur may not yield those incredible images!
Missed opportunities…
I recently had breakfast with a very smart company executive awaiting a presentation regarding financial literacy in the US. She very proudly recounted the story about her quest for a secure retirement, citing maximum contributions to her employer’s company deferred compensation plans and direct deposit of her net paycheck into her savings account and checking accounts.
Then she smiled broadly as she referred to her plan to pay off her mortgage in half the time. Of course, I congratulated her on all of her efforts.
I also silently thought of several other ways she could have leveraged the refinance and saved an additional $6,000 to $10,000. I also wondered if she had taken the limits of the new tax law, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) into account when she decided on that tack.
I also thought to myself that had she approached her CPA about planning for retirement, her accountant could have helped create an short term and long term plan that would have helped her formalize her goals, a great start to realizing them ………..
