Erroneous Notices being mailed from the IRS as reported by National Society of Accountants

The National Society of Accountants has reported that they have received reports from their members whose clients have gotten unusual notices from the IRS. These notices claim the individuals owe taxes despite having paid the taxes before July 15th. Although the checks for the taxes are reported to have cleared the bank, the IRS is sending out notices dated Monday, August 17th, that show the tax due along with penalty and interest.

It is speculated that while the IRS is depositing tax payments, they may be very slow in applying those payments to the taxpayer’s account, resulting in unnecessary notices being generated and confusing clients.
